– This love is being shoujo manga-nized. –
“Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun” is a TV anime series that was on air from July, 2014 to September, 2014.
The TV anime series originate from a manga that has been serialized on “Gangan Online” by Izumi Tsubaki. The series has started from August, 2011, and it is still ongoing. There are nine volumes out right now.
The heroine, Chiyo Nozaki fell in love with Umetarou Nozaki (called as Nozaki-kun) at first sight. When she told him that she loves him, instead of telling Chiyo his thoughts, Nozaki gave Chiyo a message board with the signature ‘Sakiko Yumeno.’ She was confused, but it appears that Nozaki is a shoujo manga (comics for female, most of the time love stories) illustrator. Chiyo decides to become Nozaki’s assistant and they get closer to each other.
The ‘weird’ identity of Nozaki-kun
Nozaki has an appearance that is 180 degrees different from a typical ‘shoujo manga’ image. Where shoujo mangas’ typical images are cute, girly, and pink (which makes people think that the authors are also like that), Nozaki is muscular, tall, and strong. This gap between the stereotypical image is where the comedy aspects appear in this anime. Nozaki is sincere towards shoujo manga, and there are even scenes where Nozaki tries to wear girls’ clothes to take a picture to use it as an example for the next chapter’s cover illustration (Nozaki ended up being unable to wear it because of his muscles).
Analysis – the collaboration of ‘boke,’ ‘tsukkomi,’ and Nozaki’s identity
The stereotype of how comedy anime goes (boke & tsukkomi) come in combination with Nozaki’s ‘weird’ identity and creates laughter among the audience. In the anime, there are many jokes relating to Nozaki’s job, and it creates interest about the job of shoujo manga illustrator too.
